Since the 1960s many things involving technology have changed and many have stayed the same, this is Continuity and change. Many things have changed and alot of them are not for the better, People use technology almost 24/7 this is very different to the sixties as even having certain forms of technology was considered a luxury, today for the majority of people the first thing they do in the morning and the last thing they do at night will involve technology, from watching TV to checking social media. Technology has and is taking away from the social life of many instead of going out or even sitting down to dinner with family or friends people will stay inside being antisocial with their technology. But technology can be a social tool which is something that has stayed the same with people gathering together to watch a sports final on TV and making a night of it. This was also done in the 60s when people of a lower social status couldn't afford technology they gathered at a friend or neighbors place who could afford the technology and they made a night of it. Another thing that has stayed the same is the fact that people of a low social standard cannot afford this technology fortunately in Australia alot of us are considered to be of a average to high social standard meaning it is just normal for a house to have 3 TV’s, 2 computers and 4 phones but for some having technology is still considered a luxury as it was in the 60’s. Something that is in some ways different but some ways the same is the way people use technology to unite. Today people use technology to show their point of view to the world and to show sympathy for example, #RiseForAlex or #SydneySiege, both of these times people from all around the world wanted to show quick sympathy for people that were in hard situations but there are also situations where people use technology to take a stand for example #WeCanDoThis a hashtag used to push the legalisation of gay marriage in Australia, people all over the world unite and use these hashtags to provide support or to show their opinion. in the 60s people did not use hashtags but people still used to unite as the technology gave them insight into how delusional their governments were and this caused many protests in the 60s especially amongst teens as they were the most affected by this new technology especially behaviorally. One of the most prominent things that has stayed the same is the impact this technology has had on women. In the 60s this technology created the idea of the ‘housewife’, the new technology was created to decrease time spent cleaning for women and when this happened the expectations of cleanliness were raised. Today still this idea of the ‘housewife’ exists but is slowly breaking down to the point where not just women but men are expected to cook, clean and shop for groceries. Overall yes alot of things have changed and alot have stayed the same and this continuity and change has had a massive impact on Australia and our popular culture.
